Finland has increased the maximum length of road transport trucks.
According to the Finnish Ministry of Transport, since January 21, 2019, Finland has increased the maximum length of road transport trucks from the current 25.25 meters to 34.5 meters, and the maximum vehicle connection weight is limited to 76 tons. This is also the country that currently has the largest vehicle length in all Nordic countries.
Since 2013, Finland has been testing ultra-long truck trains in the country. The Finnish Ministry of Transport expects that longer truck combinations can provide greater benefits for individual vehicles, especially for shipping containers, general cargo, and food transportation. It accounts for almost half of the Finnish road cargo transportation.
Although the length of the car has increased, Finland requires a 34.5-meter long car to have higher requirements for vehicle stability. Vehicles must be equipped with side cameras, automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping systems.
Next, Finland will continue to relax the length of other commercial vehicles. But in principle, the 34.5-meter ultra-long truck train will be used mainly between terminals, shopping malls or factories outside peak hours, usually at night.
